Nonimmigrant Visas

Expansion of Interview Waiver Eligibility

The Department of State, in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security, has temporarily expanded the ability of consular officers to waive the in-person interview requirement for individuals applying for a nonimmigrant visa in the same classification.  Previously, only those applicants whose nonimmigrant visa expired within 12 months were eligible for an interview waiver at the U.S. Mission in UAE.  Under the temporary authority granted by the Department of State, Mission UAE has temporarily extended the expiration period to 36 months.  This policy is in effect until December 31, 2021 unless modified sooner. This change will allow consular officers to continue processing certain nonimmigrant visa applications while limiting the number of applicants who must appear at a consular section, thereby reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission to other applicants and consular staff.  Travelers are encouraged to review what services are currently available as well as eligibility information and instructions on applying for a visa without an interview.

The Consular Sections of the U.S. Embassy and US Consulate General in the United Arab Emirates are responsible for providing visa services to those seeking to enter the United States for a temporary period and for those wishing to take up indefinite or permanent residence in the United States.

Non Immigrant Visa applicants with a need for emergency travel may request an expedited visa appointment. To request an expedited appointment, follow these steps:

  3. In the request, include the date and purpose of travel.

*If applicable, include a copy of any U.S. Customs and Border Protection messages regarding ESTA status, and why ESTA was denied.
