In some cases it is possible for a U.S. citizen to have two valid U.S. passports if he or she can demonstrate a compelling reason for a second passport. The second passport has a validity of a maximum of four years. The procedure for applying for a second passport is the same as renewing a current passport. In addition to those requirements, you must submit a signed affidavit either from your employer (if the need for a second passport is business related) or from you (if the need for a second passport is personal) that describes the need for a second passport. At the time of your passport application the Consular Officer will determine whether it is possible to approve a second passport.
