Music and Tolerance
His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan
Cabinet Member and Minister of Tolerance
Music concerns itself with the vast diversity of sound as expressed in the endless variations of pitch, rhythm, dynamics, timbre and texture.
Music must respect and understand its innate diversity if it is to create harmony.
Likewise, a human society, composed of unique individuals who differ in their own ways each from the others, must respect and understand its innate diversity if it to create a harmonious society.
That analogy can go only so far. Musical harmony depends first on the genius of the composer. Social harmony, on the other hand, depends first on the commitment of each member of the society to the spirit of tolerance and its instrumental power to achieve pluralism.
That individual commitment suggests yet another analogy. Just as each member of society must espouse tolerance in the interest of harmony, so each performing musician must embrace the musical score to produce harmony.
Though always hearing harmonious music, human society for the most part still lacks the tolerance that leads to harmonious society. We citizens of the world have much to learn from music and musicians.
