Learn, exchange, grow, and serve. The U.S. Department of State offers many programs for non-U.S. citizens wishing to come to the U.S. for cultural, educational, or professional exchange. These programs are augmented by local opportunities in countries around that world that allow non-U.S. citizens to explore U.S. culture and the English language.
The United States supports international education and welcomes foreign students and exchange visitors. Before applying for a visa, students and exchange visitors must be accepted by their schools or program sponsors.
American English is a resource center for teaching and learning about American English.
Fulbright Foreign Student Program (FFSP)
Administered by Amideast UAE; the program enables Emirati students to pursue their master’s degrees in the United States. Participants have the unique opportunity to experience life in the United States and share the UAE’s unique culture and traditions with American students. Participants are chosen through an open, merit-based competition in which leadership potential, academic excellence, and the ability to adjust to life in the United States are all considered. The application season opens in the spring, and applications are due in early July every year.
Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA)
A fully funded 10-month opportunity for early‐career educators, recent graduates, and those with a strong interest in teaching to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States while strengthening the instruction of foreign languages at U.S. colleges and universities. The FLTA program supports UAE nationals who are interested in teaching the Arabic language and in spreading awareness and appreciation for UAE heritage among U.S. undergraduate students. Applications are due on August 31 every year.
The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Award
This program provides an opportunity for post-doctoral scholars to begin a program of research or teaching at an accredited university, or a public or private, non-profit research institute in the United States. The scholar must hold a doctorate degree or equivalent professional qualification and will spend between three to ten months conducting research and/or teaching at a university in the United States. The application requires that the scholar develop a theoretically-sound, well-written, and feasible proposal that demonstrates a commitment to cross-cultural understanding and exchange. Applicants must arrange their own institutional affiliation. Applications are due on January 15 every year.
Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Scholars
Intensive post-graduate level academic programs whose purpose is to provide foreign university faculty members and scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. society, culture, and institutions. It also helps strengthen curricula and enhance the quality of teaching about the United States. (SUSIs) will be conducted by various universities and academic institutions throughout the United States from early June to the end of August every year. Application submissions are due the first week of February every year.
Study of the U.S. Institutes for Secondary Educators
SUSI provides secondary school educators (including teachers, administrators, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, Ministry of Education officials, and others) with a deeper understanding of U.S. society, education, and culture – past and present. The focus will be on providing content and materials for participants to develop high school level curricula about the United States. SUSIs for Secondary Educators will be conducted by various universities and academic institutions throughout the United States from early June to the end of August every year. Application submissions are due the first week of February every year.

Experienced professionals who participate in this program complete a tailored combination of non-degree academic study leadership development, and collaboration with U.S. counterparts while broadening professional experiences that they aim to achieve. the Applications are due on August 31 of every year.

International Writing Program (IWP) Fall Residency
One of the most prestigious programs of its kind in the United States. The IWP furthers participants’ understanding of creative writing, literature, publishing, U.S. societal values and facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration. Program activities provide international writers with opportunities to engage with the U.S. creative economy and culture and encourage American writers to connect with foreign audiences. IWP’s host institution, the University of Iowa, is also home to the world-renowned Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
